Welcome to Ta Ta For Now
Ta Ta for Now helps you back up Google Drive files that are at risk of deletion. It looks for files which have been shared with you by someone who is no longer affiliated with the University of Minnesota. You can then choose to make copies of these files to your own Google Drive.
There are a multitude of ways for someone to be affiliated with the University – student, staff, faculty, person-of-interest, etc. Ta Ta for Now does its best to determine which users are no longer affiliated, but it's not perfect, and we'll continue to refine that logic. If you spot an obvious error, please let us know.
We've answered some common questions below.
Why can't I access the site?
Ta Ta For Now is only accessible for folks on campus or connected to the VPN.
Why do you need so many Google permissions?
Unfortunately Google doesn't let us request granular permissions - we need to be able to write to your Google Drive to make copies, and then automatically includes "delete" and "edit" permissions.
What's "Easy Mode"
For users who don't have time to go through their files before the deletion cutoff, Easy Mode will attempt to automatically preserve all of your at-risk files, up to 1 gigabyte. If you've got more than 1 gigabyte of files, you'll get an email notification and you'll still be able to manually select files to preserve.
We strongly recommend that after using Easy Mode, you go through your "Preserved by TTFN" folder and delete items you don't need anymore - nobody wants a cluttered Google Drive.
Can I select all of my files, rather than going page by page?
Currently, Ta Ta For Now limits you to selecting one page at a time. Because the University is concerned about excessive Google Drive storage use, this helps prevent blanket cloning of files.
How long will it take?
For most users, it should only take a few minutes to index your files. But if you've got hundreds of thousands of files, it can take closer to an hour.
